The Essential Omnivore: Episode 1, “Bold in the Cold [Ratatouille]“

Original video featured on Essential Omnivore, filmed by Kyle Kehrwald. www.essentialomnivore.com Ratatouille with a swiss chard twist, it’s how we kept our kitchen warm last Saturday during one of those cold, cold Minnesotan days. Luckily, the sun was shining and in just under an hour we had a steaming pot of ratatouille ready to be eaten–with crispy brussels sprouts and ribbons of basil on top, of course! Best part is, ratatouille is delicious served warm, of course, but try it cold, try it with breakfast, lunch, salad, potatoes, what have you. A real trooper, ratatouille! Ratatouille with Swiss Chard 1 c. olive oil 2 onions, chopped 2 bell peppers, chopped Stems from 1 bunch swiss chard, sliced 2 eggplant, half the skin removed and cubed 3 zucchini, diced 4 cloves garlic, smashed and minced 2 lbs. tomatos (fresh, canned, however you feel) 1 bunch swiss chard leaves, finely sliced 1 Tbs. thyme leaves, finely chopped 1/4 c. coconut oil 1/4 c. Brussels sprouts 1/4 c. Basil Heat olive in a large, heavy bottomed pot over medium heat; add onions and stir well. Once cooked a bit, continue to add each ingredient one at a time (you’re going from longest cook time, the onions, to shortest cook time, the swiss chard) up to and including the thyme. Cover the mixture and turn heat to low–simmer for 40 minutes. Before serving, heat coconut oil in a pan until very hot; add finely sliced brussels sprouts to the hot oil and fry until golden and crispy. Remove from pan and let excess

Get Rid Of Dry Skin Forever

Skin isn’t dry because it lacks oil, but because it lacks water. Only a lucky few have ‘normal’ skin; the rest of us have a dry, oily or combination variety; if dryness is your problem, read on. Symptoms most associated with Xeroderma (dry skin) are scaling, which is the visible peeling of the outer skin layer, itching and cracks in the skin.

Skin also receives less blood flow and lower gland activity. Skin also harbors many nerve endings that provide the sense of touch and heat. Skin is considered one of the most important parts of the body.

Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. The epidermis contains no blood vessels, and cells in the deepest layers are nourished by diffusion from blood capillaries extending to the upper layers of the dermis. The epidermis can be further subdivided into the following strata (beginning with the outermost layer): corneum, lucidum (only in feet), granulosum, spinosum, and basale.

Environmental factors such as exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive bathing with harsh soaps, can cause dry skin. Dry skin could be due to a genetic condition. Certain drugs, including diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can contribute to dry skin. Bathing or showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may also contribute to xeroderma.

Use a humidifier if the air is dry. Dry your skin gently and thoroughly, patting not rubbing. Use as little soap as possible limiting its use to armpits and genitals.

Good skin is often a reflection of a good digestive system. Put 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your smoothies. Fatty acids are particularly important to people with dry skin. You want to work from the inside out too. For an easy fiber boost, mix in 2 tablespoons of ground up flaxseeds in raw applesauce, from 2-3 apples, made in your food processor.

Also use a thin layer of coconut oil under your make-up to moisturize your skin all day. It just takes motivation, a willingness to try it, and diligent application of coconut oil several times daily and at bedtime to see its benefits. Use bath oils and moisturizers, especially coconut oil, at least daily. Apply a thin layer of coconut oil and massage it deep into the skin.

Sunlight, water and air play an important role in keeping the skin healthy. Dry skin can be converted into healthy skin using natural home remedies. The skin is subject to constant attack from without, so can be affected by numerous conditions, diseases and ailments.

Make sure to call your dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal. You should see the results with improved skin within a few days following this advice. If nothing seems to work it might be more than dry skin, so you should see the doctor.

Which is the fastest treatment for eczema, virgin coconut oil, apple cider or urine therapy?

Coconut Oil
by anitasarkeesian

Question by knet: Which is the fastest treatment for eczema, virgin coconut oil, apple cider or urine therapy?
I’ve read from testimonials that all of them works. But I know that treating eczema cannot be done over night. So for those who’ve tried the above, which is the fastest? And which one can effectively relieve the itch?

Please suggest something else IF you’ve TRIED other natural remedies that worked.

Thanks.

Answer by dave
Apple cider? No, gently acidifying your skin might kill off some bacteria, but it won’t help eczema.

Coconut oil? Certainly it’ll help moisturise your skin and might bring some relief.

Urine therapy? As in peeing on yourself? Come on! Urine is a waste product, would you seriously pee on yourself because of something you’ve read on some ridiculous website? Please, have a bit of perspective…

Dry Skin Care – Your Quick And Easy Guide

Dry skin is easily treatable today when you know how to take care of it – inside and out. Xeroderma, the medical name for dry skin, occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs and is a very common condition.

Skin contains hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands and blood vessels. The dermis is structurally divided into two areas: a superficial area adjacent to the epidermis, called the papillary region, and a deep thicker area known as the reticular region. Our skin has many nerve endings that provide the sense of touch and heat.

Bathing or showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may contribute to dry skin. The symptoms most associated with dry skin are: scaling, which is the visible peeling of the outer skin layer, itching, and cracks in the skin. Dry skin can be caused by a deficiency of vitamin A, systemic illness, overexposure to sunlight or some medications.

Serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can arise for people with type 2 diabetes. Skin gets exposed to the elements, especially in winter, causing it to become drier. Dermatitis, contact dermatitis, eczema, seborrhea or psoriasis may cause the skin to become very dry too.

Good clear skin is usually a reflection of having a good working non-constipated digestive system. Drink freshly extracted carrot juice, if you can, every day; carrot juice is an excellent cleanser for the liver, great for the skin and contains a great deal of nutrients, all beneficial for dry skin, eczema, acne, zits, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and other breakouts. For an easy fiber boost, to help your skin, add one to two tablespoons of ground up flaxseeds to two or three apples and mix in your food processor.

If you use moisturizers, use the thick, oily-type which work better for dry skin. Dry and pat your skin gently and thoroughly after a bath or shower if it’s extremely dry or irritated. Cosmetics should be used carefully because they may dry out the skin or cause allergic reactions like contact dermatitis; read the labels.

Use a thin layer of coconut oil under your make-up, if you wear it, to moisturize and soften your skin throughout the day. Coconut oil is very inexpensive – a great, cheap home remedy for all skin conditions. Use can use bath oils and moisturizers every day, but coconut oil has the added power of healing.

After a soothing bath or shower at night just before bedtime, apply a thin layer of coconut oil over your entire body; it’ll even last on your skin through your shower in the morning. Apply coconut oil to irritated or chapped lips as well; it’s edible, so it’s safe and so healing to the lips.

Skin that’s not clean favors the development of pathogenic organisms; the dead cells continually slough off of the epidermis and mix with the secretions of the sweat and sebaceous glands and the dust found on the skin, to form a layer on its surface. Many skin conditions can be converted into clear, healthy skin by using natural home remedies.

You should see the results with improved skin within a few days following these dry skin tips and suggestions. Following some of the above treatments, your dry skin should be well on its way to recovery. If nothing seems to work it might be more than dry skin, so you should see your doctor.

Natural Dry Skin Facts Tips And Treatments

Natural treatments for dry skin are the best choice today rather than some of the harsh chemical treatments out there. Xeroderma, the medical name for dry skin, occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs and is a very common condition.

The blood vessels in the dermis provide nourishment and waste removal to its own cells as well as to the epidermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. The dermis is structurally divided into two areas: a superficial area adjacent to the epidermis, called the papillary region, and a deep thicker area known as the reticular region.

When the skin loses moisture it may crack and peel, or become irritated and inflamed. Certain drugs, including diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can contribute to dry skin conditions; check with your pharmacist or doctor and read the drug insert – you can get one from your pharmacist. Bathing or showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may contribute to dry skin.

Dry skin can be due to a genetic condition but it’s not common. Environmental factors, such as exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive bathing with harsh soaps, can cause dry skin. Serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can arise for people with type 2 diabetes.

I can’t stress enough the importance of drinking plenty of pure, filtered water – a minimum of a quart a day. Good clear skin is usually a reflection of having a good working non-constipated digestive system. The two most common problems that affect your skin are: not drinking enough water and not eating enough fiber.

Use as little soap as possible, if you have to use any, limiting its use to the armpits and genital area. Cosmetics should be used carefully because they may dry out the skin or cause allergic reactions like contact dermatitis; read the labels. Take fewer baths or showers; they’ll dry out your skin even more.

Use a thin layer of coconut oil under your make-up, if you wear it, to moisturize and soften your skin throughout the day. Dry skin contributes to fine lines and wrinkles; coconut oil helps prevent the onset by keeping the skin soft and supple. Apply coconut oil to irritated or chapped lips as well; it’s edible, so it’s safe and so healing to the lips.

Use can use bath oils and moisturizers every day, but coconut oil has the added power of healing. Coconut oil is the best healing, soothing, and moisturizing treatment I’ve found for dry skin; in fact all types of skin conditions, skin eruptions, pimples, acne, milia, irritations, cuts, burns, fungus, etc.

Many skin conditions can be converted into clear, healthy skin by using natural home remedies. Functions of the skin are disturbed when it’s not clean; it becomes more easily damaged, the release of antibacterial compounds decreases and it’s more prone to develop infections.

Call your skin doctor if dryness and itching are preventing you from sleeping. Make sure to call your skin doctor or dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal. If you’re still worried about your skin, or the problems persist, see your skin doctor.

New Ideas About Dry Skin Care

Edit Article |

Posted: Feb 21, 2007 |Comments: 0

Xeroderma literally means “dry skin”. Symptoms most associated with Xeroderma are scaling, which is the visible peeling of the outer skin layer, itching and cracks in the skin. Dry skin happens more often in the winter where the cold air outside and the hot air inside creates a low relative humidity.

Skin consists of loose connective tissue and elastin. Skin is considered one of the most important parts of the body. Skin contains the hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands and blood vessels.

The dermis is the layer of skin beneath the epidermis that consists of connective tissue and cushions the body from stress and strain. The epidermis contains no blood vessels, and cells in the deepest layers are nourished by diffusion from blood capillaries extending to the upper layers of the dermis. Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin.

Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins, can also contribute to dry skin.

Dermatitis, contact dermatitis, eczema, seborrhea or psoriasis may cause the skin to be dry too. Dry skin could also be a sign of an underactive thyroid. Serious skin complications, including dry skin, can arise for people with diabetes.

Try mild cleansers or mild soaps if you must use a soap or cleanser. Apply cool compresses to itchy areas. Keep baths or showers short using warm, never hot water.

Eat foods that contain essential fatty acids. Put two tablespoons of coconut oil in your all fruit smoothies. Good skin is often a reflection of a good digestive system. Use flaxseed oil or walnut oil in your salad. And concentrating on a diet of LOTS of fruits and vegetables (preferably uncooked) and no junk food, should give you an observable improvement within 30 days.

Use coconut oil to remove your make-up at night, like I do; it leaves a fine layer of oil to nourish your skin all night long. If you also have eczema or acne, coconut oil will treat those skin conditions too. Also use a thin layer of coconut oil under your make-up to moisturize your skin all day. Coconut oil is very inexpensive, therefore, a good, cheap, healthy, alternative home remedy.

Functions of the skin are disturbed when it’s dirty; it becomes more easily damaged, the release of antibacterial compounds decreases and dirty skin is more prone to develop infections. The skin is subject to constant attack from without, so can be affected by numerous conditions, diseases and ailments.

Dry skin can be converted into healthy skin using natural home remedies. Usually, these days, we can take care of dry skin without seeing our doctor, but sometimes we can’t avoid it. Call your doctor or naturopath when you feel itchy all over without a visible rash. If you’re still worried, or the problems persist, see your doctor.
