Massage Candle Buyers Beware

If you’re thinking of buying massage candles for yourself or for gifts, it’s important to buy a brand that meets standards for skin-safe use. As massage candles have become more popular, a number of candle makers have started to make massage candles, too. However, many of them do not understand that massage candles are considered body products that require compliance with FDA standards. Before you buy, make sure you know the facts to ensure you’re buying a skin-safe product.

Perhaps you’re wondering what massage candles are. These unique candles, also referred to as body candles or lotion candles, are made from ingredients that are skin-safe. When melted the warm oil can be used as a moisturizing lotion or massage oil.

Whereas room candles are usually made of paraffin or soy, massage candles generally feature a combination of body moisturizing ingredients. Soy itself is safe for use on the body. Because of this, you’ll find many massage candles made totally of soy. Although using soy on the skin is perfectly fine, soy alone doesn’t possess the extra-rich skin moisturizing properties that many other cosmetic ingredients do.

Better quality massage candles also include a combination of skin nurturing ingredients such as cocoa butter, avocado oil, shea butter, hemp oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, vitamin e, or other similar ingredients.

Here are three things to keep in mind when it comes to skin safety.

First is the use of skin safe scents. Not all fragrance and essential oils used to scent room candle are safe for use on the body. If candle makers simply begin using their favorite room candle scents in massage candles, there is a very good chance that many of those scents are not skin-safe at all.

Next is the potential problem of fragrance quantity. Although a fragrance may be classified as skin-safe, only a certain amount can be used to retain its skin-safe designation. Room candles typically have about 1/2 ounce to 1-1/2 ounces of fragrances added per 16 ounces of wax. To be safe for body use, massage candles cannot contain more than 1/4 ounce of fragrance oil per 16 ounces of wax, even if that oil is skin-safe. If you come across massage oil candles being promoted as heavily scented, that’s a definite red flag. They are not skin-safe!

Last, all products made for skin use must be in compliance with the FDA. Among other requirements, a complete ingredients list must be included on the label. The manufacturer’s phone number must also be present on the label itself. If you’ve yet to try a massage oil candle, get ready for a pleasant surprise. If made from skin beneficial cosmetic ingredients, massage candles can provide excellent moisture – especially when used on chapped skin, cracked hands, rough skin spots like elbows and heels, or dry skin anywhere on your body. Make sure that the candle you are purchasing is made by a knowledgeable candle maker who understands and complies with FDA standards for making skin care products. Then just use – and enjoy!
